Driving Safety Tips for Thanksgiving

Drive Planning in Advance

We recommend creating a safe driving plan in advance, including consideration of traffic and construction zones that you might pass through. We recommend using special driving applications like Waze that can provide you with real time updates on traffic, accidents, and road conditions as well as suggesting alternative routes when they are important to follow.by planning ahead, you can avoid issues.

Car Maintenance

Before your trip, make sure that your vehicle is in good condition to drive. Check vehicle tire pressure, tread depth, and fluid levels. If your vehicle needs an oil change, do it in advance of your Thanksgiving trip. A vehicle that has received maintenance is far less likely to break down, reducing the chances that you will need towing service or roadside assistance service in Chicago.

Emergency Driving Kits

We recommend assembling an emergency driving kit in advance that contains a first aid kit, flashlights, jumper cables, non perishable snacks, flares, and warm clothing or blankets.

Avoiding Distractions

Do not check your phone when driving and avoid engaging in distracting conversations with your passengers. Distracted driving is a major source of accidents. If you need to use your phone only do so with hands-free features, or pull your vehicle over to a safe location in order to do so.

Speed Limits

Make sure to pay all posted speed limits, especially in areas under construction or in areas with heavy traffic. Adjust your speed according to road conditions and weather needs – always drive slower than the speed limit in inclement weather.

Using Rest Stops

We recommend avoiding fatigue by using rest stops to stretch, eat food, drink water, and take short breaks when driving. Fatigue can dramatically impair your decision making skills and reaction time, and these are both skills that are absolutely essential for safe driving.

Paying Attention to Weather

Stay up to date about weather conditions for your drive, and adjust driving according to weather conditions. Slow down in dangerous weather, increase following distance between you and other cars, and use headlights to improve your car’s visibility. If weather conditions become extreme, we recommend delaying travel plans and taking safe refuge until weather improves.

Seatbelts and Safe Item Securtng

Always keep your seatbelt on, and make sure to properly secure all items like luggage or food when driving. Make sure that all items are fastened before driving, as loose items can be thrown about when you stop suddenly, which can be a danger.
